FAQs

Freelancer & contractor questions

What’s the difference between a contractor and a freelancer?
The terms overlap. Both are self-employed and usually receive Form 1099-NEC instead of a W-2. “Contractor” often describes longer engagements with one client; “freelancer” usually means shorter projects for several clients. The tax rules are largely the same.
What experience do you have with freelancers?
A large share of our clients are self-employed. We understand irregular income, multiple 1099s and the practical realities of working for yourself.
Which industries do you work with?
Creative and digital, IT and engineering, consulting, healthcare (travel nurses, locum physicians), media, trades, gig and rideshare work and more.
What is self-employment tax?
It’s Social Security and Medicare tax for people who work for themselves — 15.3% on most net earnings, on top of income tax. Half is deductible, and the right structure can reduce it.
Should I form an LLC or elect S-corp status?
An LLC adds liability protection but doesn’t change your taxes by itself. An S-corp election can lower self-employment tax once profits are high enough to justify a reasonable salary and payroll costs. We’ll run the numbers for you.
How can I save for retirement as a freelancer?
A SEP-IRA or Solo 401(k) lets you contribute far more than a regular IRA, with a tax deduction for contributions. We’ll help you pick the right plan.
What are my tax obligations?
Keep records, pay quarterly estimated taxes, file Form 1040 with Schedule C and SE by April 15, file a Mississippi return — and send 1099s to anyone you pay above the threshold.
Can an accountant increase my take-home pay?
Very often, yes — through correct deductions, the home office and vehicle rules, retirement contributions, health insurance deductions and the right entity structure.
